  • The construction of two additional lanes for Highway 60 between St. James and Butterfield will begin July 10. A two-month detour is planned to start in mid-August.
When the detour is in place, motorists will be directed to Highway 4 and Watonwan County Roads 10 and 5. The detour adds five miles.
Initial plans called for the detour to take place in the second year of construction, but MnDOT and the contractor realized benefits of building the connections at both ends this year so only minimal road work will take place under traffic.
The project consists of grading, paving and bridge work for two additional lanes south of the current two lanes. It is a two-year project with grading, connections and bridge work in 2013 and paving and final bridge work in 2014.
This is the first of three projects planned to complete the expansion of Highway 60 to a four-lane facility. The gap between Butterfield and Mountain Lake is scheduled for construction in 2015-16 and the section from Mountain Lake to Windom is planned to begin in 2017. Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye is the contractor on the $14 million project from St. James to Butterfield.
