  • Father Steffl of St. Mary’s Church has been assigned by Bishop John M. LeVoir to pursue a degree in Canon Law.

Father Steffl will attend St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada for an in-depth study of the system of laws that govern the Catholic church throughout the world.

“Canon Law entails everything from relating the way the sacraments are celebrated, to the way the diocese functions and the parish is governed,” Fr. Steffl said.

During his two-year assignment here, Fr. Steffl taught junior high religion at St. Mary’s School and helped out the local parishes in Morgan, Leavenworth and Comfrey.
Originally from New Ulm, Fr. Steffl graduated from Cathedral High School. He obtained a bachelors degree in accounting from St. Cloud State University and from there went into the seminary. He has been a priest for eight years.

“I’ve been very happy to be here. It’s been a good assignment,” said Fr. Steffl. “I’ve been glad to be involved in the parish and the community. There are a lot of good things going on in Sleepy Eye. I look forward to keeping up with people even as I’m leaving.”
