  • Stephanie Braun, former Sleepy Eye resident, has a career as a professional stylist in California dressing actors on television and in movies. But when her sister, Stacy Berkner, aka Stacy K, asked her to help her create her first-ever music video, Stephanie emphatically resounded with “yes!”

“Mainly I’m a wardrobe specialist and that’s the direction my career is going,” Stephanie said. “But I really enjoyed the creative process of directing this video.”

Stephanie conceptualized the video, came up with the look of all the shots in the video, did location scouts, cast the actors, directed it, styled the wardrobe and sat with the editor selecting the shots and even acting in the video.

A lot of the time, Stephanie said she would have images come to her in the middle of the night that she eventually started compiling.

“Eventually all these 3 a.m. visions came together as a full story,” Stephanie added.

After envisioning the story for the video, she began researching where in Minnesota she could realistically achieve the vision with no money for the project, two days to shoot two separate music videos and a two person crew with four actors to help out.

“Most music videos have a crew of 20 people working on them,” Stephanie commented.

She said from beginning to end the video took three months of work for two songs that total five minutes.

“It was definitely the most work I’ve done on any project,” Stephanie added.

Stephanie said for her, the most memorable part of the project was creating the story. She said her sister, Stacy, rejected her first idea of shooting the video at her great-grandmothers old home near Sleepy Eye.

“She said she didn’t want her video to look like a country music video,” Stephanie said. “Her saying that pushed me to go more creative and more abstract with it.”

Because the song is called Dream Song, Stephanie went online and researched what kinds of dreams people commonly have and where she could find locations in Minnesota to capture that feeling. They shot their video in a sculpture garden an hour north of Minneapolis and at the Lakewood Cemetery.

She said the hardest part, by far, was the editing process.
