  • For the past few months I have fielded several calls about various topics, but one question that comes up more and more is, “I am considering relocating to Sleepy Eye, what can you tell me about it?”

As the chamber director and resident of Sleepy Eye, I am proud to be an advocate and that question is one of my favorites to answer. It is a favorite because it has given me the opportunity to look at Sleepy Eye as an entire community and break it out into smaller segments; education, religion, employment, recreation, shopping, safety and the list goes on.

It is exciting to hear the person on the other end of the phone say, “Really, Sleepy Eye has all of those employers and businesses?” or “Really Sleepy Eye has an Aquatic Center, a bike path around the lake and camping sites?” I simply reply, “Yes, it does.”

It is human nature to not appreciate as we should what we have right in front of us. It is easy to think there is nothing to do or our town is too small to do certain things. However, I share with you that when people from another area hear and see what Sleepy Eye has to offer and how we thrive as a successful rural farming community, the pride and appreciation should be felt by all.

The success of what Sleepy Eye is hasn’t just happened; it is a combination of things. Sleepy Eye has an attractive appearance and a safe environment for people to live in because of the guidance of community leaders who have laid out a vision and direction. The appeal of Sleepy Eye also encourages businesses to open its doors and hire one or hundreds of people. With the strong employment opportunities, the confidence people have in Sleepy Eye filters to the other segments I referred to; retail, service related business, schools and churches.

By continuing to work together as civic minded business owners, leaders and residents of Sleepy Eye, we will nurture a healthy community and continue to surprise people.
