The undefeated Sleepy Eye Post 7 Legion baseball team extended its winning streak to 5-0 on Monday after defeating Mankato American 6-4.
John Mangen led the way for the offense by going 2-3 at bat with one RBI. Mitch Neid went 2-4 with one RBI, while Brandon Helget went 1-3 and added two RBI.
Sean Mathiowetz threw nine strikeouts and only two walks to lead the team on the mound.
On June 20, Sleepy Eye hosted the Mankato Nationals and beat them 9-6. Sleepy Eye took advantage of Mankato’s poor fielding after they scored four runs in the first inning to take control.
The Legion extended the lead to 8-0 in the second inning after multiple base hits allowed them to score four more. The National’s offense woke up as they slowly managed to shorten Sleepy Eye’s lead, but Sleepy Eye held on to win 9-6.
Mangen led in pitching with three strikeouts but allowed 11 hits and six runs. Jordan Anderson also pitched in the game and threw four strikeouts of his own. John Brandl went 2-2 at bat with two walks and one RBI, while Matt Schroepfer went 1-3 with 2 RBI.
Sleepy Eye’s next games will be at the Upper Midwest Tournament on July 5-7.
