Sleepy Eye’s VFW 14U baseball season is under way, and the team is hosting a tournament for surrounding area teams this weekend.
Sleepy Eye started their season on June 4, where they crushed Lamberton in a 16-3 victory. Nathan Schroepfer went 2-2, scored three runs, had a double and a triple, and three RBI to lead the pack. They carried that momentum through their second game on June 6 with a 15-5 win over Springfield. Schroepfer went 3-5 and had six RBI to lead Sleepy Eye.
Most recently, Sleepy Eye 14U competed in the Delano Tournament, where they went 1-1-1 overall. They tied Forest Lake 7-7 to start off the tourney, but ran into trouble after being defeated by Buffalo 3-11 in their first loss of the summer. But the team bounced back and beat Hopkins 14-9 to finish strong.
The 14U Sleepy Eye Tournament will be held this weekend, where six teams from around the area will compete.
On Friday, June 21, Sleepy Eye will face off against Hutchinson at 7:45 p.m. On June 22, Sleepy Eye will take on New London-Spicer at 3:45 p.m. Game one of the final bracket on June 23 will be at 9 a.m. while game two will be held at 11:15 a.m. The losers of game one and game two will play for third place at 1:30 p.m. while the championship game will be at 3:45 p.m.
Meanwhile, the main Sleepy Eye VFW baseball team has won its most recent game. On June 15, Sleepy Eye crushed St. Clair 13-0 in a quick five innings. Sleepy Eye scored seven runs in the first inning to set the tone of the game. It was originally supposed to be a doubleheader, but the second game got rained out and it will not be rescheduled.
Top performers included Jon Kopacek, who threw nine strikeouts and only allowed one total hit to lead Sleepy Eye. Kopacek also went 2-3 at bat and had a double along with five RBI. Matt Berkner went 2-2 had a double, a triple, and a single RBI to further lead the team. Sleepy Eye had a total of 11 hits and made no errors.
