Sleepy Eye VFW’s summer baseball season is under way.

The team lost to New Ulm Gold 6-9 on June 5 to start their season. New Ulm started strong with two runs, but Sleepy Eye responded in the second inning with five runs of their own to get a safe lead.

Sleepy Eye gave up five runs in the fourth inning which took their lead away. New Ulm had a total of 11 hits while Sleepy Eye only had five and committed three errors in the game.

Matt Berkner went 3-4 with three RBI to lead Sleepy Eye at bat. Elliot Braun and Dylan Klein struggled on the mound and only threw a combined three strikeouts in the game.

But VFW made up for the loss with two wins on June 8. The team had a doubleheader against Fairmont, and they won the first game 3-2 after 11 hard-fought innings. Brandon Helget and Jake Mielke made a crucial double play in the bottom of the 11th to keep Fairmont from scoring.

The second game was quite different. Sleepy Eye pulled away early and had a huge six run inning in the fifth. Fairmont committed four errors which helped Sleepy Eye’s offense.

Top performers of the second game include Helget, who went 2-3, scored two runs and had two RBI, Jon Kopacek, who went 2-2, scored two runs and had three RBI, and Jared Rothmeier, who went 2-3 and had three RBI as well.

The team is now 2-1 overall and will host St. Clair on June 15 at 11 a.m.
