Joseph Mathiowetz, age 91, of Sleepy Eye, died at the Sleepy Eye Hospital on Saturday, May 25, 2013. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye with Msgr. Eugene Lozinski as celebrant. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Sleepy Eye. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue Tuesday from 7:30am to 10:00am. The family would prefer memorial be directed to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church elevator fund. Joseph Charles Mathiowetz was born November 18, 1921, on the family farm north of Sleepy Eye, the son of Joseph & Mary (Gewerth) Mathiowetz. He attended country school, District #35, through the eighth grade. He farmed until he was drafted into the Army Air Corps, serving from 1942 to 1946. He returned to Sleepy Eye where he continued to farm until his retirement in 1985. On May 7, 1988, Joe married Shirley (Macht) Stelzer. The couple continued to live on the farm place until 2004 when they moved into Sleepy Eye. Joe enjoyed baseball, bowling, golfing, fishing and hunting. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, V.F.W., and Catholic Aid.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye; step-children, Stanley (Karen) Stelzer of North Redwood, Cheryl Easterday of Worthington, Brenda Stelzer of Clements; eight step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; sisters, Loretta Mathiowetz of Fairmont, Evelyn Betts of Fairmont; and sisters-in-law, Annie Mathiowetz, Lorraine Mathiowetz and Mildred Mathiowetz.
