  • Lady Knights split last two regular season games, win first playoff

    St. Mary’s softball team hosted Martin County West on May 16. The Knights scored three runs in the second, but the Mavericks had a 5-4 lead going into the sixth inning.
     
    The highlight of the game was in the bottom of the sixth inning, when senior Maddy Helget hit a solo home run to tie the game at 5-5.
     
    Helget said she was very happy about hitting her first high school career home run.
     
    “It felt really really good,” Helget said. “It came at a great time, it felt really good and it was my pitch and I just went with it.”
     
    Junior Karissa Fleck hit a double in the sixth to bring in two runs and the lead which the Knights held on to.

    On May 18, the Lady Knights hosted the Thunderbirds and eight errors cost them the game.
     
    St. Mary’s allowed GFW to score three runs in the third inning, while the Knights struggled to create opportunities for themselves.

    May 21: St. Mary’s 2 Cleveland 0
     
    The Knights hosted Cleveland on May 21 for the first Section 2A playoff game.
     
    It was a close game with solid pitching on both sides up until the fourth inning, where junior Bethany Berkner hit a base hit which resulted in the first run for St. Mary’s. Junior Karissa Fleck followed with a hit of her own which brought in the Lady Knight’s second run of the game.
     
    St. Mary’s hosts New Ulm Cathedral today for the next playoff game.
