  • Anderson throws no-hitter at GFW, Knights beat NUC

  • The Knights now share the title of Tomahawk Conference Champions with Springfield after they beat New Ulm Cathedral on May 20 in Sleepy Eye.

    The Knights defeated the Mavericks 9-6 on May 16 in Sleepy Eye. Martin County West started with a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but St. Mary’s responded with three runs of their own after hits by sophomores Brandon Helget and Jon Kopacek.
     
    The Knights created a safety net in the fifth inning after they scored six runs. But the Mavericks scored three runs in the top of the seventh after a slow pitching start from sophomore David Surprenant. But Surprenant was able to finish strong despite the pressure put forth on him by the Mavericks.
     
    “I didn’t want to give up the game so I had to pull myself together,” Surprenant said.

    St. Mary’s crushed the Thunderbirds on the road in a doubleheader on May 18.
     
    Senior Jordan Anderson threw a no-hitter in a short first game to lead the Knights. He also went 2-2 at bat and scored three runs.

    Game two started out evenly for both teams, due to a slow pitching start for senior Mitch Neid. But St. Mary’s pulled away after they scored a combined nine runs in the last three innings.
     
    “Mitch pitched well after a rough start and our bats came alive in the fifth to take control of the game,” coach Bruce Woitas said. “It was a nice doubleheader win for us today.”

    The Knights scored three runs in the first inning to take the early lead in the first game.
     
    Senior Sean Mathiowetz threw six strikeouts and only allowed two hits to lead St. Mary’s solid defense.

    Game two started strong for the Knights, but unfortunately got rained out and the game had to be resumed in New Ulm on May 21. St. Mary’s started the second half of the second game with a 4-0 lead and within less than an hour the Knights sealed game two after they scored four more runs in the late innings.
