New Ulm Cathedral hosted St. Mary’s on May 7 for a softball doubleheader in which the Lady Knights barely prevailed.

St. Mary’s scored all four of their runs in the fourth inning. The Greyhounds scored three of their own also in the fourth inning, but the Knight’s defense held the Greyhounds to only those three for the rest of the game.

On May 9, the Sleepy Eye cross-town high schools played each other in a doubleheader. St. Mary’s took control of the first game after they scored eight runs in the fourth inning. The Indians couldn’t come up with enough hits to catch up, even after they had four less errors than the Lady Knights.

Solid pitching by both St. Mary’s Laura Pelzel and Sleepy Eye Public’s McKayla Ahlrich, led the game into five extra innings. But after a close play at first from a base hit by Larissa Helget, junior Karissa Fleck was able to hit in Helget to win the game in the bottom of the 12th.

“This was a hard fought game,” Sleepy Eye Public coach Tim Hoffmann said. “A few mistakes cost us the win.”
