May 13 Game 1: St. Mary’s 7, Springfield 0; Game 2: St. Mary’s 10, Springfield 5

St. Mary’s softball team hosted the Tigers on May 13 where the Knights swept them two games to zero.

St. Mary’s showed solid fielding, not letting any runs throughout the first game. Senior Maddy Helget pitched six strikeouts to lead the Knights.

In game two, St. Mary’s continued their powerful offensive game and scored 10 runs throughout the seven innings. Junior Deonna Brinkman hit two home runs to make the icing on the cake for the Knights.

“It felt good,” Brinkman said. “It felt good to hit better again because I didn’t start as good as I usually do in the beginning of the year.”

May 14: St. Mary’s 3, Wabasso 2

The next day, St. Mary’s was in Wabasso to take on the Rabbits. Sophomore Laura Pelzel pitched six strikeouts to lead the Knights. She also went 3-3 at bat.

Although St. Mary’s committed four errors, they were able to pull out the win with a single run in the sixth inning to break the 2-2 tie.

“Bats helped make up for our mental errors tonight that happened early with the two unearned runs,” Knights coach Wendy Owens said.
