The St. Mary’s baseball team has extended their record to 12-1 after their five most recent games.

On May 9, the Knights faced off in a doubleheader against the cross-town Indians. In the first game, St. Mary’s took an early 3-0 and had five more runs in the fifth in which Sleepy Eye Public couldn’t catch up to.

In the second game, the Knights took their big lead in the third inning this time, and the game was over after the fifth inning.

Senior Sean Mathiowetz threw seven strikeouts to lead the Knights. It was his senior year pitching debut, due to a strained rotator cuff in his shoulder that kept him from pitching earlier this season.

Mathiowetz normally plays at shortstop, but he said he was excited to be back on the mound again.

“It feels good. Especially senior year,” Mathiowetz said. “I mean it was tough not to be out there at the beginning of the year.”

Mathiowetz said after throwing 58 pitches in game two, his shoulder didn’t feel sore or strained.

“It felt good today,” Mathiowetz said. “I wasn’t coming back until I thought I was ready.”

May 13 Game 1: Springfield 3, St. Mary’s 1; Game 2: St. Mary’s 12, Springfield 3

The Knights lost their first game of the season on May 13 when they hosted Springfield in a doubleheader.

Senior Sean Mathiowetz pitched for St. Mary’s and threw 12 strikeouts, but allowed six hits which was enough for the Tigers to get ahead.

“Last year we were undefeated going into playoffs and I think we were a little overconfident and we got bit,” Mathiowetz said. “So I think it’s not a good thing, but it’s not the worst thing to get bit here in the regular season.”

Coach Woitas had the same mentality in regard to their first loss.

“If we can learn from it and make it a positive, I think that’s what we’ll do with this,” Woitas said. “Having a loss this time of year is probably okay, it gets everybody back down to earth a little bit.”
