  • A preliminary budget presentation was first on a list of items at the Thursday evening school board meeting. But with the regular legislative session still more than a week away from closing at the time of the meeting, those preliminary numbers were just a best-guess estimate according to Superintendent John Cselovszki.

“There are things that will change and with the sequesterian our federal funds may be down,” Cselovszki told the board. “I feel at this time I don’t want to guess and it will be adjusted by the end of May. This is worse-case scenario. My style is to be realistic.”

Cselovszki told the board that according to the Minnesota Rural Education Association what is at stake in the legislature in education is money on the formula, early childhood scholarships, referendum equalization and equity revenue to help those districts with less than $300/pupil in referendum authority.

He said that in June when the final budget numbers have to be submitted to the Minnesota Department of Education for the next coming school year and the legislative session has closed, he will have definitive numbers to report.

In other news, the board approved:

    • the resignation of Ashley Hawker and Arica Otte who have gone to pursue positions closer to where they currently live.
    • the hiring of Mindy Price as a sixth grade teacher; Amelia Schmid as SPED teacher; Allison Rubie as a second grade teacher; Kristina Iwan as the vocal music instructor, vocal director and three act play director; and Elizabeth Hauer as the instrumental music instructor and band director.
    • the targeted summer school staff.

The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held June 13 at 7:30 p.m.
