  • Fishermen rejoice! There are now two businesses in the area that are selling live bait just in time for the fishing opener this weekend.

McCabe’s Ace Hardware owner, Russ McCabe, now stocks a variety of live bait for purchase at his hardware store in Sleepy Eye.

McCabe’s store is now in stock of different sizes of suckers, fathead minnows, nightcrawlers, worms and eventually, leeches.

McCabe said this is the first time his store has ever sold live bait, and it will be open year round to satisfy the ice fishermen during the winter.

Another bait and tackle shop will be opening on May 10 near Lake Hanska. Craig Blackstad is the business owner of the Lake Hanska Bait & Tackle Shop, which sits only hundreds of feet away from the Lake Hanska public boat access on 260th Street.

Blackstad said he will be catching all of his own bait to sell, unless he can’t trap enough, in which case he will buy some so he will be stocked either way. He plans to trap minnows, leeches, and eventually golden shiners and creek chubs.

Blackstad will also have various lures and other fishing gear to sell at his shop.
