St. Mary’s 16, CMC 2
St. Mary’s 25, CMC 5
It was a long, cold, but successful evening for the St. Mary’s softball team on May 2 when they hosted Cedar Mountain/Comfrey in a doubleheader.
The Lady Knights got off to a nice start in the first game with eight runs in the first inning. More than half of those runs were walked home due to poor pitching by CMC. St. Mary’s pushed their lead to 14-0 after they scored six more runs in the third inning by taking advantage of the inaccurate pitches by the Cougars.
The only runs scored for the Cougars were due to a home run in the top of the fifth inning.
Pitching: Maddy Helget 5 IP, 23 BF, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 H, 1 HR, 4 K, 3 BB.
Other: Bethany Berkner 2-3;
Emily Schumacher 1-2, 2 R, 2 BB.
The second game was no different for St. Mary’s. The Cougars continued to struggle with their pitching while the Knights continued to do well offensively. St. Mary’s scored five runs in the first which was followed by 10 more in the second to gain another early lead.
One highlight of the game was a great catch in the bottom of the second inning when the Knights were fielding. A pop fly was hit toward second base and bounced in and out of junior Deonna Brinkman’s glove, then Larissa Helget, who ran in from center field, was able to snag before it hit the ground.
“Actually I thought it was coming to me so I was sprinting over there,” Helget said. “It was pretty much of a ‘Deonna dropped it, quick!’”
Helget not only made a great defensive catch, but she also hit an impressive triple in the top of the third, which easily could have been an inside-the-park home run.
In the bottom of the fourth, a home run was hit by the same CMC player who hit one in the first game, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to St. Mary’s 25 runs.
Pitching: Laura Pelzel 5 IP, 25 BF, 5 R, 4 ER, 4 H, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 K, 3 BB.
Other: Larissa Helget 2-3, 3 R, 1 3B;
Karissa Fleck 3-4, 3 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI;
Deonna Brinkman 2-4, 4 R;

St. Mary’s record: 5-1 overall, 3-1 conference.
