The St. Mary’s baseball team beat Wabasso 6-0 on May 7, but that wasn’t even the exciting part.

It was Bruce Woitas’ 400th win as head coach for the Knights, a feat that has been 24 years in the making. The team celebrated by dumping a cooler of cold water on Woitas after the game on Tuesday evening.

Woitas said he’s proud to have coached a successful team all these years.

“It’s a little bit of longevity,” Woitas said. “This is baseball country, a lot of great kids have come through our program and played so I mean it’s just a combination of all of those things.”

Woitas said he is hopeful of possibly getting 500 wins some day.

“I hope to be around for a while yet so we’ll see what happens.”

Both teams had a slow start at the game, but St. Mary’s scored the first runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after a few base hits. The Knights extended their lead with three more runs in the sixth inning which sealed the deal.

It was sophomore Jon Kopacek’s first varsity start as pitcher and he threw seven strikeouts for St. Mary’s.
