After practicing for weeks prior to competition, the Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter’s CDE team’s hard work paid off at regional competitions last week. On Monday, April 22, the Dairy Foods, Dairy Judging, and Dairy Handlers all qualified for the state competition after attending the Region VI Contest at South Dakota State University.
The Dairy Judging Team earned first place in the competition. Team members included Bethany Seifert, Emily Kjelshus, Sabrina Portner and Mary Rosenhammer. Leading the way was Sabrina in third, Bethany in fourth and Emily in tenth place individually.
The Dairy Foods Team placed third overall and was led by Miranda McMullen (fourth place). Team members included: Miranda McMullen, Katelyn Johnson, Erin Kotten, Marisa Martinez, and Stephanie Hammerschmidt.
New to the competition this year were Dairy Handlers Rebecca Rosenhammer and Jeni Kotten. Rosenhammer finished in first, followed by Kotten in seventh, which qualified both of them for the state competition.
The General Livestock Team earned 11th Place at Regions. Team members included Cody Gilliland, Luke Fischer, Ashley Helget, Courtney Engholm and Zoe Macklanburg.
On Tuesday, April 23, the Nursery Landscape and Floriculture CDE Teams traveled to Southwest Star Concept in Okabena, where both teams excelled and qualified for state competition.
The Nursery Landscape Team earned fourth place with Kari leading the way with a second place finish, followed by Cassidy in tenth place. Team members included: Kari Schumacher, John Mangen, Cassidy Hacker, and Kaylee Hillmer.
The Floriculture Team earned fourth place at Regions as well with Kacie in sixth Place individually. Team Members included: Carly Jensen, Kacie Goblirsch, Jordyn Domeier and Josie Schieffert.
The Sleepy Eye FFA Chapter will have members competing in 11 Career Development Events at State. Career Development Events build on what is learned in agricultural classes and encourage members to put their knowledge into practice. These events are designed to help a member prepare for a career in agriculture by testing and challenging the student's technical, leadership, interpersonal and teamwork skills, as well as their knowledge of the subject matter.
