  • Minnesota born illustrator and children’s book author Nancy Carlson stopped at St. Mary’s Elementary School to talk about her books and give the fourth through sixth grade students an art lesson.

She began her session by talking to students about her passion for writing and illustrating, saying that she knew she wanted to be an artist by the time she was in kindergarten.

She began illustrating books first and eventually began writing along with illustrating. She has written and illustrated over 64 books including the Harriet and Henry book series.

“Everything that has happened to Harriet has happened to me,” she told the class. She always went on to say that the characters are modeled after people she knows and she also uses experiences her children and husband have had. Harriet’s neighborhood is where she grew up, she said, setting the stories in and around the midwest where she grew up.

After a short talk, she walked students through the art of illustrating by coaching them how to draw a picture of Harriet the dog, who happens to be modeled after her Golden Retriever, Lily.
