April 26: St. Mary's 13, Buffalo-Lake-Hector-Stewart 3; April 29: St. Mary's 10, Blue Earth Area 0
The rule is, if a team gets ahead by 10, the game is over. This is what happened in the past two games for the Knights.
On April 26, St. Mary's faced off against BLHS in Sleepy Eye. The Knights started out strong in the first inning. They scored one run after a double by sophomore Brandon Helget and another after a wild pitch from the BLHS pitcher.
St. Mary's pushed their lead to six in the second inning. Multiple walks and base hits allowed them four more runs.
The Mustangs showed some life in the top of the fifth, but the Knights sealed the deal after they scored two more runs in the fifth and another five in the sixth.
Senior Mitch Neid pitched all six innings and threw nine strikeouts. He also went 2-4 at bat and had two RBI. He said his strategy on the mound was pretty simple.
"Getting it in the zone, and just keep on throwing it hard," Neid said. "Letting them hit it and let my defense do what they do."
Another key player was senior Jordan Anderson, who went 3-3 and scored four runs.
Jordan Anderson 3-3, 4 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI;
Sean Mathiowetz 1-3, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 SB;
Brandon Helget 1-2, 3 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 SB;
Mitch Neid 2-4, 2 RBI;
Jon Kopacek 2-4, 1 RBI;
David Surprenant 1-3, 1 R;
Mike Zinniel 0-1, 3 R.
On April 29, a similar game took place for the Knights when they played Blue Earth Area at home.
St. Mary's once again took an early lead after strong hits from Anderson and senior Sean Mathiowetz in the bottom of the second. This was followed by a double by Neid and another double by sophomore Lucas Heiderscheidt for another run in the third.
The game was over after the Knights scored six more in the fifth inning. The Buccaneers made many errors throughout the game, which St. Mary's took advantage of.
"We're just going to put it in play and make them make mistakes," Anderson said. "And our pitcher pitched really good for his first outing so it was nice to see that."
Sophomore David Surprenant had his first varsity start as pitcher and threw five walks and three strikeouts.
Jordan Anderson 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI;
Sean Mathiowetz 2-4, 1 RBI;
Mitch Neid 1-3, 2 R;
Lucas Heiderscheidt 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI;
David Surprenant 1-3, 2 R, 1 SB;
