Game 1: St. Mary’s 4, Minnesota Valley Lutheran 3; Game 2: St. Mary’s 6, MVL 4

It was a cold, but exciting season opener for the Knights on April 25 in Sleepy Eye.

The first game was sluggish for St. Mary’s. A walk, a steal, and a base hit resulted in MVL scoring the first run in the top of the third.

But the real excitement began in the seventh inning. The Chargers pushed their lead to 3-0 after they scored two runs by hitting multiple base hits. The Knights only had one more chance to come back into the game at the bottom of the seventh. Base hits by senior Karlie Heiderscheidt and junior Karissa Fleck created opportunities for St. Mary’s and the Knights eventually scored three runs to tie the game after junior Emily Schumacher hit a single. Schumacher proceeded to steal second and third base, and ran home after a wild pitch by MVL, and scored a fourth and final run to win the game for St. Mary’s.

“I knew my team needed me and I just went in there confident that I could hit that ball,” Schumacher said. “It’s just awesome to start it off this way and show everybody who we are.”

In the second game, the Chargers took a quick lead in the first inning, but the Knights responded in the top of the second inning after they scored three runs by a walk and hits from Fleck and senior Molly Schwartz.

In the bottom of the fifth, a hit was sent deep into left field and resulted in a double for an MVL player, and proceeding base hits scored the Chargers another run.

An almost backward scenario from the first game played out in the seventh, in which the Knights scored three more runs, but then MVL responded with two of their own in the bottom of the seventh. But St. Mary’s great fielding led them to the victory. St. Mary’s coach Wendy Owens said she was happy with the results of both games.

“The first game was huge, the girls showed me that they weren’t ready to die,” Owens said. “They executed well. We lost focus here at the end, but for the first two games it was nice to get those two wins under our belt.”
