April 29: St. Mary’s 6, Buffalo-Lake-Hector-Stewart 2; April 30: Wabasso 2, St. Mary’s 0
St. Mary’s softball team defeated BLHS April 29 but lost to Wabasso on April 30 in a close game.
Against the Mustangs, the Knights got an early lead in the first and added to that lead throughout the game. BLHS couldn’t score off of their five total hits because of St. Mary’s solid pitching and fielding.
Deonna Brinkman, Larissa Helget and Emily Schumacher combined for three runs scored to lead the Knights. Senior Maddy Helget led the way in pitching with 11 strikeouts.
Pitching: Katie Kalenberg 6 IP, 2 ER, 3 2B, 4 SO;
Maddy Helget 7 IP, 2 ER, 11 SO.
Other: Deonna Brinkman 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B;
Jenna Hose 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI;
Larissa Helget 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B;
Emily Schumacher 1-4, 1 R.
On April 30, the Knights got their first loss of the season, against Wabasso. The Rabbits got off to a good start with a single run in the first inning. Although the Knights had great defense, they struggled with their offensive game to get some runs of their own.
“We played great defensively,” coach Wendy Owens said. “We just didn’t get timely hits with runners on, left nine on!”
Junior Karissa Fleck went 3-3 at bat and had one double, but it wasn’t enough to get past the Rabbits. Kim Frank and Laura Pelzel pitched for the Knights, and combined for 10 strikeouts.
“We did not get the hits when we needed them,” Pelzel said. “We got hits, we just couldn’t finish it off.”
Pitching: Kim Frank 7 IP, 2 2B, 5 SO, 2 BB;
Laura Pelzel 7 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 5 SO, 1 BB.
Other: Karissa Fleck 3-3, 1 2B;
Bethany Berkner 1-2;
Deonna Brinkman 1-4, 1 2B.
