  • Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) is awarding over 10,000 books to early childhood screening and summer reading programs through its new book distribution grant program.

The Sleepy Eye Public School’s Book Wagon is one of 31 organizations receiving books.

The R.E.A.D. (Reading Encourages Academic Development) program, a partnership with the Pearson Foundation, is designed to support early literacy efforts that enhance school readiness for our young children. This effort is part of SMIF's Early Childhood Program, focused on providing resources so all children can have a healthy life of learning, achieving and succeeding.

With a total value of $69,424, the books provided to SMIF's R.E.A.D. grant program are generously donated by the We Give Books program. We Give Books was created by the Penguin Group and the Pearson Foundation as a way that young children, together with their parents or caregivers, can come to understand the power of reading--and of giving.

The organizations were selected because they provide quality Early Childhood Screening and Summer Reading Programs that strengthen parental awareness of early literacy needs, including communication and language development.
