  • Winners of the 2013 Kitty Lieb Historic Essay Contest have been announced by the Brown County Historical Society Board of Trustees.
     
    Committee judges have awarded Barbara C. Becker 1st place, whose essay was "History of the New Ulm Turner Ladies Society.”
     
    Joanne Griebel submitted "Milling 'Round Brown County" for 2nd place and George L. Glotzbach penned "Growing Up German-American Catholic in New Ulm, Minnesota 1931-1948” and won 3rd place.
     
    Since its beginning in 2002 the contest has read more than 50 essays on a wide variety of topics focused on Brown County's past. This year the committee was pleased to receive five entries and have planned a short ceremony in honor of all 2013 contest writers.
     
    The ceremony will be held at the Railway Restaurant, in Sleepy Eye on May 13 at 6 p.m. The public and all interested writers are invited to attend.
     
    A representative collection of essays are available on the http://browncountyhistorymn.org web site and copies are available for free check out at 2 North Broadway in New Ulm. For more information call 507-233-2616.
