Customers behind on bills encouraged to use automated payment options

Interstate Power and Light Company (IPL), an Alliant Energy company, encourages Minnesota customers who are not current on their utility bills to take action now.

Customers can pay their bills using automated services over the phone or online, and can talk to a customer service representative by calling 1-800-ALLIANT (800-255-4268).

If customers make no attempt to pay their bills and do not attempt to set up a payment plan, they may be subject to disconnection after April 15.

Alliant Energy customers can use the following options for paying bills and managing their accounts:

Online payment – To make an instant online payment, have your Alliant Energy utility account number and your bank account information ready. Go to

Pay by phone – Call us and follow the instructions in the interactive system. Have your Alliant Energy utility account number and your bank account information handy.

Budget Billing – You can spread heating and cooling costs evenly over the entire year. Alliant Energy calculates your average bill and sets it as the billing amount each month. The budget bill amount is reviewed and adjusted, up or down, every six months.

Online account management – you can enroll in online account access for more ways to review and manage your bills. When you enroll at, you can choose the options below:

Automatic Payment – You can have your utility bill automatically deducted from your account every month. You’ll need your Alliant Energy utility account number and bank account information.

Paperless Billing – You can receive, review and pay your bill online.

Customers in Minnesota can call 1-800-ALLIANT 24-hours a day to discuss payment options.

To obtain financial assistance, qualified utility customers can apply for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program funds until May 31, 2013. For more information on where or how to apply for LIHEAP funds, people can contact their local community action agency or visit, or call 1-800-657-3710.

Eligibility for energy assistance is based on income, rather than on whether someone is behind on their energy bills, rent or owns their home.

As of March 31, 2013, approximately 2,853 IPL residential customers in Minnesota are 60 days or more behind on their bills, up slightly from last year at 2,760. These customers owe more than $1 million up $73,499 from last year – about 1 percent. The average bill for IPL residential customers in Minnesota who are behind is $352, up from last year at $337.
