Mayor Jim Broich proclaimed Arbor Day in Sleepy Eye on May 2 during a regularly scheduled meeting Monday evening. A tree planting program is scheduled for that day at 1:30 p.m. at Sportsman’s Park.
In addition, several parents from the Girl Scout sponsored summer swim team spoke to the council to gain support of the team, which is in question whether it will be allowed to exist this summer.
Swim team representatives said they are required to submit a schedule of practice times and swim meet schedules to the Girl Scouts organization by April 19. Currently the Parks and Recreation Department has added new activities at the pool that edged out scheduled time for swim team practices.
City Manager Mark Kober recommended a meeting be held within the next week with the swim team representatives and the Parks and Recreation Department to see if a schedule could be worked out.
In other news, the council approved:
- a variance request waiver contingency by Judd and Jen Walter to build a basement under their home. The variance allows the lowest floor elevation to be built two feet below the high water mark. Existing regulations allow construction not less than three feet above the high water mark. The waiver releases the City of Sleepy Eye from being liable for water damage.
- Fire Chief Tom Moldaschel recommendation to approve Shaun Heiderscheidt and Jesse Fischer as new firemen pending approval on their physicals.
