  • Brother Martin Sellner, FSC, son of the late Albert and Sophie (Mathiowetz) Sellner, will be returning to Manila in the Philippines to work in various Christian Brothers’ elementary schools, high schools and universities.

The Christian Brothers are an international order of Brothers who teach and administer schools on the elementary, high school and university levels. They work in over 70 different countries with headquarters in Rome.

Brother Martin was a chemistry professor at De La Salle University and at Del La Salle Zobel School in the Philippines for 15 years from 1985 to 2000. At a recent visit to Manila, the Christian Brothers in the Philippines asked him if he would consider coming back for further work. He was asked to help elementary and high school teachers in the use of labs for the students, and also animate the faculty in various ways.

Other work he is being asked to do is to be an advisor on how to improve the physical conditions of the various science laboratories. The school year in the Philippines starts on June 1. Brother Martin will be leaving to go there on May 17.

Brother Martin is a 1955 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. He joined the Christian Brothers right after graduation from high school and was accepted into the order in August of 1955.

Brother Martin pronounced his perpetual vows as a Christian Brother in 1962. He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religious Education, a Master’s Degree in Education and a Masters Degree in Chemistry.

Besides having worked in the Philippines, Brother Martin taught chemistry and mathematics at St. Patric High School, Chicago, Ill., and at Hill High School and Hill-Murray High School in St. Paul.

Since his return from the Philippines in 2000, he has been assisting the elderly Brothers in the Twin Cities area, living at the Christian Brothers residence attached to Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul.

In his spare time he has become a genealogist, having put together family books for five families, and is presently working on three other families.

In Minnesota, the Christian Brothers have three high schools in the Twin Cities, a retreat center near Stillwater, and St. Mary’s University in Winona. The graduate school for St. Mary’s University is located in Minneapolis.
