United Way of Brown County board is sponsoring a fundraising event on Sunday, April 14 at Turner Hall in New Ulm.
“A Perfect Pairing” will provide a 4-course gourmet meal which will be paired with a specific Schell’s beer to enhance the flavor of each menu item.
Ted and Jace Marti will present an informative program regarding their beer pairing recommendations. All proceeds of the fundraiser will fund the Youth Activities Scholarship.
United Way of Brown County has offered a “scholarship” program for many years that helps fund kids who want to participate in after-school activities but have trouble coming up with the fees.
The days of just signing up and showing up to participate in an activity are long gone. Now every activity requires a fee to participate and for families with multiple children in school who want to participate in different seasonal activities, the financial commitment can be impossible. This program lets families who qualify for free and reduced meals apply for a scholarship which will pay for 80 percent of the participation fee.
Though this program has been available for a number of years, the number of families applying has increased dramatically. Part of the reason is that the scholarship program opened up to all schools in the county when United Way went county-wide a couple of years ago. The other reason is that some schools were able to provide waivers for students who demonstrated financial need but with the tightening up of school budgets, this is disappearing.
Just three years ago, the program was able to fund all requests with a $22,000 budget. This year requests are anticipated to exceed $40,000.
The United Way board decided to find more funding so that no child is turned away who qualifies for an activities scholarship.
