It was a night of individual acknowledgement, memories from great seasons, and of course, great food.
KNUJ held their 51st Annual Player of the Year Banquet at the Holiday Inn in New Ulm on March 26 in which the top athletes from schools around the area were recognized and given a chance to become KNUJ’s player of the year.
The night began with everyone enjoying a complementary dinner, followed by the recognition of the players of the week in boys and girls basketball, and wrestling. Brian Langeland, Kari Wersal and Johnny Frank were the guest speakers. All three of them were named player of the year in the years past.
Sean Mathiowetz, Kansas Adams and Brandon Polesky represented the Sleepy Eye schools for boys basketball.
Meanwhile, Maddy Helget and Claire Krumbach represented for the girls basketball players of the week.
Not to mention, Lance Briard represented the River Valley wrestling team.
The player of the year award and trophy was given to Carter Kirk of Mountain Lake Area for boys basketball, and Carly Sigurdson of BOLD for girls basketball. Seven of the 14 girls players and eight of the 16 boys players have scored over 1,000 career points.
Nathan Rose of Sibley East, Taner Trembley of LCWM Area, and Adam Cooling of Mad/Tru/ML were all chosen for players of the year in wrestling. Out of the 16 wrestlers, seven of them were state champions this year.
The most recent player of the year in Sleepy Eye was Molly Mathiowetz of St. Mary’s in 2007 for girls basketball, Josh Hadley of Sleepy Eye Public in 2002 for boys basketball, and Jacob Anderson of River Valley, last year for wrestling.
Congratulations to all of the players and their superb winter sports seasons. Although no Sleepy Eye athlete was awarded the title of KNUJ’s Player of the Year, all of them were top contenders and deserve all of their great achievements.
