  • The annual Miss Sleepy Eye Coronation took place Saturday, March 9 at the Eagles Orchid Inn, where Maddy Helget was crowned Miss Sleepy Eye 2013. Her attendants are Molly Schwartz and Jessica Schmitz.
    Maddy is the daughter of Terry and Tammy Helget. Molly's parents are Joe and Judy Schwartz and Jessica's parents are Tony and Lisa Schmitz.
    All three young ladies were awarded scholarships and tiaras for their titles.
    Maddy will take over the duties from Miss Sleepy Eye 2012, Courtney Schneider, who will go on to compete at the The Minneapolis Aquatennial Queen of the Lakes ambassador program in July.
    Aquatennial Princess, Anna Surprenant, the former Miss Sleepy Eye 2011, presented Courtney with an Aquatennial ambassadors token.
    Along with Anna, the 2013 Aquatennial Queen of the Lakes, Carly Smith and Aquatennial Princess, Leah Kruc, with their commodore escorts, also attended the pageant.
    Mary Woitas was awarded the Commodore Award for her volunteer work with the Miss Sleepy Eye program.
    For the past 66 years, Sleepy Eye has been crowning a young lady to represent the city of Sleepy Eye.
    Miss Sleepy Eye and her attendants have been escorted through many community parades during the past 66 years. This year Maddy, Molly and Jessica will be featured on a float during the Sleepy Eye Buttered Corn Days Grand Parade on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 5 p.m., as well as many parades around the area this summer.
