On Saturday, March 2, the Sleepy Eye Just For Kix dance teams competed in the United We Dance competition in Apple Valley at Eastview High School.
The event featured 173 performances which included over 2,848 dancers.
The Mini Kix dancers in grades three and four competed in the kick division and received first place. The team performed to the song, "Let's Hear It For The Boys."
The Middle Kix dancers in grades five through seven also competed in the kick division. They received second place in their section and performed to the song, "Halfway There."
The Sleepy Eye Just For Kix program is in its first year of performance and featured students this year from ages three years to seventh grade (although there are opportunities for dancers up to their senior year in high school). The Just For Kix local director is Kelsey Hansen and the assistant is Becca Nachreiner.
"The Sleepy Eye Just For Kix program has never competed before so this was the dancers first time going to a dance competition," Kelsey Hansen explained. "We started preparing in January by learning the dances and added in some longer practices to help us clean and polish the routines."
Kelsey added that the teams went into the day not expecting to place but with the expectations of performing their dances better than they have in the past, learning something new and having a blast competing.
"I am so proud of how hard all of these girls have worked; they have truly grown individually as dancers and together as a team. They really did learn that hard work does pay off!" Kelsey said.
