The Knights boys basketball team's exceptional season was brought to an end after losing to Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity 73-80 on March 11 in the Section 2A semi-final.
St. Mary's started the game with great defense, leaving the Bulldogs with the only option of shooting missed 3-pointers. Meanwhile, the Knight's were executing offensively by cutting in toward the basket for easy points.
St. Mary's led for most of the first half by 5-8 points, however, the Bulldogs caught up in the last few minutes and ended the half with a 3-pointer to tie the game 29-29.
It was a back and forth lead at the start of the second half, but the Bulldogs pulled ahead by making some 3-pointers and taking advantage of some foul opportunities. The Knights rushed to catch up but missed many 3-pointers. They were worried about the scoreboard rather than slowing down and concentrating.
"The second half they prevented us from getting to the hole as much," senior Jordan Anderson said. "We ended up shooting from the perimeter a lot and we just couldn't get the shots to fall today."
Anderson made a 3-pointer with two minutes remaining to make it a four point game, 68-72.
Sean Mathiowetz also gave the Knights some hope after cutting the lead to 71-74 by making a basket and a free throw in the final minute. However, the Bulldogs held on to win 80-73.
Head coach Tim Milliard said he was proud of his team's great season and will miss his seniors.
"It was an excellent season," Milliard said. "The tough part is going to be I've had these three seniors since they were freshmen, its been fun to watch them develop and grow."
