Briard finishes final year with undefeated record
Senior Lance Briard is the 2013 Class A wrestling state champion after a 3-1 decision victory in the final match at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul on March 2.
Not only did Briard win the state tournament, but he also finished with a perfect 37-0 record, the first person to do so in River Valley history.
“It really feels incredible, just knowing that all the work I put in really paid off,” Briard said. “I don’t know, it still hasn’t really hit me yet.”
Briard breezed through the 285 weight class in the state tournament with style. He pinned his first two opponents, and he won by a 9-3 decision in the semi-final.
His only close match was the final one, in which he defeated Jarrod Grunklee of Blooming Prairie by a 3-1 decision.
Briard served as team captain for the past two years for the River Valley Wildcats. According to head coach Todd Bertram, he was an exceptional leader for the team.
“He’s just a nice kid, works hard,” Bertram said. “He’s great to have in the practice room and is a great role model for all of our kids.”
Briard is finishing up his final year at Springfield High School, and was the only wrestler to represent the River Valley team at the state tournament.
The Wildcats have now had a state wrestling champion in three out of the past four years.
Briard said he plans on going to college at Augustana where he received scholarships and will continue wrestling and playing football.
“It’s been very eventful that’s for sure,” said Briard regarding his high school wrestling career. “But I’ll definitely miss it. I am looking forward to college though.”
