  • Plan to attend the 19th Annual Science & Nature Conference on May 15, 2013 at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.
The conference is for students in grades K-8 and will begin at 8:00 am with registration and conclude at 2:00 pm.
Lonnie Dupre of Grand Marias is the keynote speaker. He began his third attempt (in January 2013) to become the first person to summit Mount McKinley (also known as Denali) alone in the month of January.
After nineteen days he was forced, by several factors, to make the decision to begin descending the Alaska mountain.
During an arctic career spanning 25 years, Dupre has traveled over 15,000 miles throughout the high arctic and polar regions by dog team, ski and kayak. He will have many interesting stories and great photographs of his travels to share with conference participants.
Last year's conference drew over 1400 participants. Parents can register their children on their own. With many different topics, all students can find hands-on classes they're interested in attending.
A sampling of topics include kitchen chemistry, grossology, rockets, crime scene investigation, geocaching, mysteries of Egypt, minerals and rocks, zoo careers, stargazing, conservation exploration, engineering, emergency room activities, cryogenics, planetarium shows, and much more.
Students must be pre-registered and accompanied by an adult to attend the conference. The early bird registration deadline is March 27 with the final registration deadline on April 3. Register early for a better chance for your child to get the classes they're most interested in.
The conference brochure and registration form are available on SW/WC Service Cooperative's website: www.swsc.org/studentactivities. If you have questions, contact Andrea Anderson at andrea.anderson@swsc.org or 507-537-2257.
