St. Mary’s 57
Grove City 44
Seniors Jessica Schmitz and Maddy Helget combined for 29 points to lead the Knights to their first playoff victory on Tuesday at St. Mary’s.
A very physical game created a lot of free throw opportunities for the Knights. Helget went 6-6 at the line and Nikki Carr went 4-5.
Head coach Bruce Woitas said he was happy with the win.
“It was a nice team win for us,” Woitas said. “We knew it was going to be a battle all night long. We were able to take advantage of their foul situation.”
The Knights started the game strong, with senior Devyn Meyer making a quick 3-pointer to get an early lead.
St. Mary’s led at half only by four points, 20-16, due to a very close back-to-back first half between the two teams.
The Falcons had a very strong start to the second half, with senior Erica Melbie making a couple of 3-pointers and even gaining the lead on the Knights 28-26 with 13 minutes left.
However, St. Mary’s came back and showed great defense, solid passing, and scored in transition multiple times and eventually created a comfortable lead that lasted throughout the second half.
“We definitely did a better job in the second half with teamwork and moving the ball better, getting it to both sides of the court,” senior Molly Schwartz said.
As many know, Maddy Helget now has over 1,000 career points in her four years playing for St. Mary’s and she said her achievement is giving her and the team further confidence.
“It just gives you the confidence that you set a goal, you work at it, and you can get it,” Helget said. “And this is our next goal, to get to state.”
The Knights will play on Friday against either Lester Prairie or Nicollet.
