Each November the VFW Auxiliary holds a Patriots Pen essay contest for students in grades six through eight with a theme chosen by state officials to write something about patriotism.
Jim St. Peter of St. Mary’s School penned one of the winning essays in the local contest this past fall, sponsored by the Auxillary VFW Post 800. His essay took first place in District 2 competition and will now advance to the state competition that takes place in Minneapolis on Jan. 26.
St. Peter is the son of Jim and Chris St. Peter.
The contest consists of four levels; The first level, (entry) is sponsored by local VFW Posts. Those winners’ essay’s advance to the VFW District (regional) level where a first-place winner is advanced to the VFW Department (state) level.
The one first-place district winner at the Department level is then advanced into the VFW National competition. The winner from each Department (state) then competes for the national prizes. The top 46 national winners all receive at least a $1,000 savings bond. The first-place award is currently a $10,000 savings bond plus an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the winner and
