We all feel the pain and anger when we hear of a tragic loss or death of an innocent little child. But let’s not forget those innocent and helpless little ones still growing in their mommy’s womb! Good nutrition, exercise and medical care is essential for those babies to be born healthy. So if you are pregnant or know someone who is, please be informed about how to keep your baby healthy while he/she is developing, and do everything you can to make sure that baby has a full nine months (40 weeks) of pregnancy to be healthy and ready to enter the world.
Having a healthy baby “someday” begins well before pregnancy. The sooner you start living a healthier lifestyle, the better off you and baby will be! So if you are a woman in child bearing years, here are some things you should know:
- Make sure you are taking a multivitamin with folic acid. Try to get to a healthy weight before pregnancy, and visit your health care provider for regular checkups. If you are smoking, stop. Limit alcohol use and do not use illegal drugs.
- When you suspect you may be pregnant, get a pregnancy test right away. The sooner you start improving your nutrition and general health, the healthier your baby will be. Your growing baby depends on you to keep him healthy! See your doctor regularly and take your prenatal vitamins.
- Smoking, drinking alcohol and taking illegal drugs can seriously damage your unborn baby permanently. Caffeine should also be limited during pregnancy.
- During your pregnancy be careful about the kinds of pets you keep in your home. Some, such as reptiles, should not be handled during pregnancy.
Other things to avoid include: handling cat litter; hot tubs and saunas; lead exposure from lead pipes, faucets and other sources such as stained glass hobbies; mercury from broken bulbs and thermometers; pesticides and certain chemicals (check labels).

Seek professional help if you need it. Despite your best efforts, you may find yourself feeling persistently sad or anxious, plagued by physical complaints, unable to sleep, irritable and hopeless and unable to face routine chores. If these feelings last for a while, talk to your doctor or a mental health professional.
