  • In the past we have had numerous fundraising benefit organizers ask to have their information published in the Herald-Dispatch, and most of them would like to have it at no charge. While we’d like to be able to include all those events at no charge in the print edition, there are costs that are attached to everything. The three that stand out for every newspaper is printing, postage and payroll.

Our answer to the above-mentioned requests has changed for 2013. We’ve come up with a fundraiser event rate.

This rate is considerably less than our regular advertising rate and only applies if the group is raising funds to directly benefit someone else.

An example would be if a group came to us to create awareness of a fundraiser to help someone with medical expenses due to illness. These ads will be place in our entertainment area of the Herald-Dispatch and the Brown County Reminder giving the event the best possible coverage and encouraging attendance.

One thing to remember if you are organizing a benefit, benevolent organizations that provide matching funds most of the time need to have that mentioned in the advertising of the event. You will want to include that in your advertising message as well.

At the current time, we are a bit short on our editorial staff since Josh and Leo’s departure from the sports scene. What has happened is Brandon Roiger and Karrah Remus came to us after a request placed in the school daily news. The pair have been covering Sleepy Eye Public’s winter sports scene for us and we thank them for their help!

At the same time, we put in a request at St. Mary’s for the same help and didn’t receive any responses. That is why you may have noticed a lack of coverage of those events. While we are doing our best to give coverage based on what coaches submit, sometimes there isn’t much submitted. To those athletes we apologize and want you to know we are doing our best to get a sports writer hired. Hopefully soon, we will have someone in place.

While Terri’s time is more than used each week, there are some things you can do to help get your event covered. (Please keep in mind if your event is something the public has to pay to attend, it is considered advertising. Simply stated - if you charge, we charge.)

You could provide a press release of the event information, (email is best), submitted photos from the event works well too. You are also more than welcome to send more than one photo. While we may only be able to put one or two in the print version, we certainly can put more online with the story as well. Many people now have digital cameras and phones that are capable of taking photos and video. So if you are willing to email that to us, we are more than willing to put it online.

Keep in mind a file more than 5MB will not email.

Compress your files and attach them to the email.
