  • January is National Blood Donor Month, a time when the American Red Cross recognizes and thanks the millions of dedicated blood donors across the country for helping ensure a stable blood supply for patients in need.

Monday, Jan. 14, from 1-7 p.m., the American Red Cross will host a blood drive at the Eagles Orchid Inn, 500 Burnside St. SE in Sleepy Eye.

All eligible donors are encouraged to make a blood donation appointment by calling Jane Fischer at 507-794-7625.

January can be an especially challenging month to collect blood donations because of inclement weather and seasonal illnesses. Throughout the month, the Red Cross is honoring the contributions of those who roll up their sleeves to help save lives, one donation at a time.

All blood types are needed to help maintain a sufficient blood supply. Type O positive and negative, B negative and A negative donors who meet the eligibility requirements are encouraged to double their impact by donating double red cells.

Double red cell donation allows donors to give two red cell units, while plasma and some saline solution is returned to the donor. Double red cell donation is particularly helpful from donors with type O, A negative and B negative blood, which are often needed by patients and thus in short supply. Because two red cell units are donated at one time, one can donate every 112 days or up to three times a year.
