Several years ago I had the opportunity to go to Nashville for a Home Interiors national convention. The convention took place in January so the Opryland Hotel was still decked out in Christmas splendor. Beautiful, is an understatement.
One of the guest speakers at the convention was Mamie McCullough. She has been the single most inspiring speaker I have ever had the opportunity to hear.
She is the queen of, “I can.” Mamie’s background is that she comes from the deep south where determination and hospitality go hand-in-hand. Her family was dirt poor and her mamma was a widow at a very young age. Even though she came from such extremely humbly beginnings, she had the determination to succeed, and that she did.
Mamie is a nationally recognized motivational speaker. Like I said earlier, she is one of the most inspiring speakers I have ever heard.
Mamie is like the bumble bee - she doesn’t know that some of the things she achieved as a young woman shouldn’t have been possible. She just went out and accomplished them anyway.
Mamie is a living, breathing example of the bumble bee and she wears a bumble bee lapel pin everywhere she goes. She explains it like this. Aerodynamically, a bumble bee’s body is too heavy and its wings are too light to carry the bee in flight. But the bee doesn’t know that so it just flies anyway.
Mamie stood on stage and I heard her say, “Anything you believe, you can achieve.” I believed her and I think I’ve achieved a couple of things along the way.
It’s the beginning of a new year and maybe there are things you want to change in your life. Now is the time to “just do it!” Take the example of the bumble bee and just fly.
One other funny thing Mamie told us that day was, she took a simple can and cut out eyes from magazines and taped them to the can. That was her “eye” can. Anytime she doubted she could do something, she wrote it down on a piece of paper and put it in her eye can believing with all her heart that she could. That’s how she became the “I can” lady. If you ever need a good read, Mamie has a book called, I Can, You Can Too. Mamie did and so can you.
Thought for the week: Dreams come true and goals can be achieved, if only you just believe.
