Marcus W. Brandel, 91, of St. George died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26 at the St. George Catholic Church in St. George with Father Anthony Hesse celebrating the Mass. Burial will follow in the St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday and 7:30-8:30 a.m. Monday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home NORTH CHAPEL in New Ulm and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Marcus William Brandel was born on December 10, 1920 in Nicollet County to William and Agnes (Huelskamp) Brandel. He attended St. George Parochial School until the 8th grade. On October 6, 1947 Marcus was united in marriage to Madeline Buysse at the St. George Catholic Church. He farmed in West Newton Township, Nicollet County and resided on the original farm site for 85 years. Marcus was a master carpenter and woodworker. He loved his animals, playing sheephead, talking with neighbors, collecting model tractors, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of St. George Catholic Church and the St. George Catholic Order of Foresters.
Marcus is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Ruth Brandel of New Ulm, Arlene and Ron Dietl of Sleepy Eye, Bonnie Brandel of St. George; sons and daughter-in-law, David and Karen Brandel, Bill Brandel, Mark Brandel, all of St. George; grandchildren, Ron Dietl Jr. (and special friend, Shelly Nickel) of Clear Lake, Becki (Tim) Herzog of Sleepy Eye, Shelly (Brian) Murphy of New Ulm, Renee (Jeremy) Hildebrandt of Becker, Shelly (Marcus) Hopp of New Ulm, Stacey (Jeremy) Hillesheim of New Ulm, Jenny Brandel (fiancé, Tim Piepgras) of Hanska; great grandchildren, Jaylin and Blake Hildebrandt, Alec and Makayla Dietl, Joey and Sam Herzog, Nathan and Logan Murphy, Ramsey, Mitchell and Levi Hopp, Lucas and Avery Hillesheim; sister-in-law, Yvonne Spaude of Gibbon; and by many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Madeline; brother, Walter Brandel; and by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
