  • Sleepy Eye Medical Center (SEMC) recently implemented eEmergency technology from Avera eCare™ to support SEMC physicians in emergency care situations, when required. This innovative service links two-way video equipment in the SEMC emergency department to emergency-trained physicians at a central hub in Sioux Falls, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Our physicians are the primary providers of emergency care at SEMC, but there may be occasions when a consulting resource will be of benefit to them,” said Kevin Sellheim, CEO and administrator. “Further, there are times during late evening and early morning hours when a SEMC physician is not in the hospital. As a small community hospital, it’s just not feasible to have a physician in SEMC around the clock. eEmergency allows us to begin physician-directed care immediately, during those critical few minutes when the patient first arrives at our facility.” The eEmergency physician initiates diagnostic testing that supports rapid decision making and treatment upon the arrival of an SEMC physician.

“eEmergency gives our physicians and staff streamlined access to specialists for assistance with trauma, stroke, sepsis, acute heart attack and other emergency care issues,” said Sellheim. “We will have a great team at our fingertips when we need them and is one example of how we are using cutting edge technology to better serve our patients.”
