United Way of Brown County just finished their annual backpack distribution. A total of 127 backpacks were provided to students in the Sleepy Eye school district whose families qualify for the free meal program. With all the things families have to buy to send their children to school, it is one less burden to families whose income doesn't stretch as far as they hope.
The value of the 127 backpacks filled with school supplies is over $6,000. The backpacks are provided through a grant from the Salvation Army and the supplies come from donation boxes placed throughout the county and the balance paid for through funds generated through the United Way annual campaign. This year donations of school supplies, plus $1,800 of United Way funds, filled over 450 backpacks distributed throughout the county. This program is just one of many services that United Way of Brown County can provide due to the generous support of Brown County residents.
