  • Indians edge Tigers 5-4

  • The Sleepy Eye Indians took the home field Sunday afternoon, July 1, looking to complete a season series sweep of the Springfield Tigers. The Indians managed to hold off a late game rally to get the win, 5-4.

  • The Sleepy Eye Indians took the home field Sunday afternoon, July 1, looking to complete a season series sweep of the Springfield Tigers. The Indians managed to hold off a late game rally to get the win, 5-4. Andrew Woitas got the start, matched against Mike Salazar of the Tigers. Woitas took a no hit no run effort into the fourth inning, when the Tiger’s Matt Vogel looped a single to right field. By then the Indians had a 3-0 lead. The Tigers’ Alex Fink lined a single and Ryan Sturm drove in Vogel to make the score 3-1.


    Sleepy Eye established the early lead in the first inning when Joey Walter dumped a single to center and later scored on an Andrew Woitas RBI single. Sleepy Eye tacked on two more runs in the third inning after Jake Bohnen led off with a double and Andrew Woitas and Scott Salfer had back-to-back run scoring singles, bumping the score to 3-0.


    In the bottom of the fourth the Indians got the run back from Springfield when Walter led off with a home run to right field for a 4-1 lead. There was no scoring until the seventh inning when the Tigers scored an unearned run that cut the Indians’ lead to 4-2. The Indians had a key run in the bottom of the eighth on an Andrew Woitas RBI double. Woitas was 3-5 at the plate with three RBI.


    The Indians weren’t out of the woods yet. The Tigers plated a run in the top of the ninth inning on back-to-back doubles by Vogel and Fink to close the gap to 5-3. Coach Bruce Woitas brought in Matt Helget in relief of Woitas. Helget got the first out on a fly to left and the second when Christian Loomis lofted a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-4 with a runner on second base. Helget forced Salazar to ground out to third, ending the game.

     The Indians have the week off and do not play until next Sunday, July 8 when they travel to Stark to face the Longhorns.
