  • It is no question that senior St. Mary’s golfer Mikail Sellner has had an unforgettable season in golf this year. After accomplishing a hole in one, making a trip to the state tournament and acquiring new perspectives along the way, there is nothing more that Sellner could ask for in his senior year.
The major highlight of his season was when he overcame a rare feat in golf: knocking down a hole-in-one during the Section meet at the North Links Golf Club in Mankato. He came upon hole 16, which was about 165 yards, and the conditions were perfect without much wind. “After the second bounce, it just landed in.” described Sellner. Unfortunately, Sellner couldn’t keep the golf ball as a remembrance of the event, after losing it in the water at the next hole. “I learned a lot that day, that you can’t give up. You can have a bad start, but you can always end up pulling out a good round.”
As a front runner for his team the majority of the year, he pushed himself to make it to state from the beginning of the season. “I made it my goal to qualify for state,” said Sellner. With his averages staying consistent throughout the year, Sellner was able to achieve his goal. Going into state, his mindset was just to relax and have fun. “The subsection and section meet felt way more intense, I was just glad to be at state.”
Sellner finished the tournament with a total of 166, 22 strokes behind the leader and came home in 33rd place out of 88. “I wasn’t as satisfied with my performance the second day, but I just tried to stay confident through it all.” Overall, staying positive was the key to his success. Sellner says he owes a lot to his coach, Tom Larson, for providing positive advice and for encouraging him along the way. Sellner will be attending St. Cloud State this fall and has been contacted by the golf coach about playing college golf for them next year. However, Sellner remains undecided about the opportunity. “It’s still up in the air for now, because it is a huge time commitment,” he added. Although for Mikail, one thing is for certain; he will continue to play golf and take what he has learned from it with him for the rest of his life. “You really learn the value of hard work and focus,” declared Sellner.
