Capping an unbeaten season, the Sleepy Eye Indians girls golf team took the Section 2A golf meet Monday with a dominant performance, winning by 29 strokes at the North Links Golf Club in North Mankato.  Lauren Laffen took second place overall, Carissa Hillmer tied for third and Emily Curtis was in a tie for fifth. The Indians team of Emily Curtis, Carissa Hillmer, Lauren Laffen, Karrah Remus, Anna Ibberson and Aileen Roman will play in the Class A state tournament on June 12 and 13 at Pebble Creek in Becker.
On the boys’ side, St. Mary’s golfer Mikail Sellner qualified for state shooting a 75, aided by a hole-in-one on the par 3 16th, good for a second place finish overall. C.J. Windschitl of St. Mary’s missed qualifying by one shot, losing in a one-hole playoff for the last individual spot. Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s team finished third overall.
The Sleepy Eye United girls 4x200 sprint relay team raced to first place in the Section 2A Track and Field meet and qualified for the State Track and Field meet. Nikki Carr, Courtney Schmitt, Jessica Schmitz and Jamie Marti ran a flawless race in 1:47.87, just .13 seconds short of the section record and exceeding their personal best by a huge four seconds. The same quartet finished second in the 4x100 relay, also qualifying for State, with a school record time of 51.06. When asked if they thought they would win the 4x200, the girls chorused, “No!”
“We were the fifth seed,” explained Nikki Carr. “We just ran our best and won.” The sprint relay team should be in a good place for the state meet, with preliminaries beginning on Friday, June 8 and finals for qualifiers on Saturday June 9.
“I’ve looked at the times of the other qualifying 4x200 teams and we’re right in there,” said coach Kris Bloedel. “If we run the way we are capable of running, we should do well.”

    Nikki Carr – fourth – 100 meter – 13.1
