  • Gertrude Grunig passed away Friday, April 27, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom. Mass of Christian Burial for Gertrude Grunig, age 88 of Windom, and formerly of Heron Lake, will be held on Monday, May 7, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye with Father Russell Scepaniak officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery in Sleepy Eye. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2012, at the LaCanne Family Funeral Home in Windom and on Monday for one hour prior to services at the church in Sleepy Eye. Condolences can be sent online to: www.lacannefuneralhome.com. Memorials preferred. Arrangements are under the care of LaCanne Family Funeral Service.
    Gertrude was born April 8, 1924, on a farm in Stark Township south of Sleepy Eye to Peter Simon Goblirsch & Katherine Elizabeth (Molden) Goblirsch. She was baptized, received her First Communion, was Confirmed and was married at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. Gertrude grew up helping with the gardening, chores around the house and with the younger siblings. She attended country school except for fourth grade when she attended boarding school to prepare for her First Communion. Gertrude was united in Marriage to Leonard Richard Grunig on June 12, 1945 at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye. This union was blessed with 8 children, Clara, Diane, Arthur, Gerald, Karen, Alyce, Dale and Jane. They lived on farms near Comfrey, Lamberton and Mountain Lake before purchasing a farm north of Heron Lake were they lived for 34 years before moving to Windom. Gertrude was a “stay-at-home-mom” and spent much of her time gardening. Her hobbies included photography and genealogy. To her credit many of the pictures were hers in the pictorial directory for Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake, where she was a member.
    Gertrude is survived by eight children, Clara Burnham of Fort Collins, CO; Diane (Richard) Kunz of Colorado Springs, CO; Arthur Grunig of Windsor, CA; Gerald (Rose) Grunig of Glendale, AZ; Karen (Peter) Baalson of New London, MN; Alyce (Paul) Mahoney of Cottage Grove, MN; Dale Grunig of Windom, MN; Jane (Brian) Sterenberg of Boone, IA: 24 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren;1 great-great-granddaughter, 5 brothers and sisters, Aloysius (Loretta) Goblirsch of Hamel; Margaret Schwartz of Aurora, CO; Arlene (Gerald) Schreopfer of Sleepy Eye, MN; Catherine (Lester) Hillesheim of New Ulm, MN; Cletus (Deloris) Goblirsch of New Ulm.
    Gertrude is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Leonard; her parents: one granddaughter, Natalie Kunz, two brothers, Martin Goblirsch and Fr Leo Goblirsch and 2 sisters, Cecelia Goblirsch and Sr Maria Goretti. (Rosalia Goblirsch).
