James N. “Jim” Schmitz, age 90 of Waite Park, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died peacefully at Country Manor in Sartell, on March 16, 2012. Services were held at Church Of The Holy Spirit, St. Cloud, on Wednesday, March 21, at 11 a.m. The clergy was Fr. Thomas Knoblach, Interment was at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Sleepy Eye with Military Rites by the Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Arrangements were with Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye. Jim was born on Jan. 2, 1922 to John and Agnes (Merth) Schmitz. He married Malinda Domeier on Nov. 28, 1945, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, New Ulm. Jim was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Sleepy Eye. He served in the Submarine Service of the United States Navy during World War II. He was employed by the State Bank of Sleepy Eye for 38 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Sleepy Eye American Legion, and a former member of the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed all sports and was an avid golfer. At age 88 he shot a score of 39 on a golf course in Montana on which he never played. He also was awarded a plaque for a Hole-In-One at a course in Phoenix Ariz., where he and his wife spent many winters since retirement.
Jim is survived by; daughter, Pat (Steve)Manor, Leland, N.C.; son, Jack (Jerri) Motley, and daughter Mary Kay (Bill) Caesar, Bloomington. He is also the loving Grandfather of Brian (Kerry) Schmitz; and Great Grandfather to Hailey and Cameron Schmitz, Monticello. Brother, E. Peter (Rita) Schmitz, Sleepy Eye.
He was preceded in death by his wife Malinda; parents, brother Phillip; and sisters, Helen and Carmella.
