Ben Ludewig, age 91 of Comfrey, died Friday, March 9, 2012, at Brickstone Manor in Comfrey. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 17, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Comfrey with burial at St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, March 16, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sturm Funeral Home in Comfrey, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Parish Prayer Service is Friday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Military Honors by Albin Johnson American Legion Post #244. Father Andy Michels will be officiating. Benjamin Charles Ludewig was born August 18, 1920, in Leavenworth Township, Brown County the son of Ray and Gertrude (Schumacher) Ludewig. Ben served with the U.S. Army from 1942-45 with tours in Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He was united in marriage to Alvina Treml on April 27, 1948, in Leavenworth. Ben farmed, owned Ben's Standard station, worked for Cargill, and was co-owner of Ludewig Brothers Implement. After retirement, he repaired lawn mowers and took care of his wife Alvina due to her severe arthritis. Ben was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and the Catholic Aid Society. He was a member of VFW Post #800, the Comfrey American Legion, served on the Rural Water Committee, and the Brown County Landfill Education Committee. Ben enjoyed gardening, canning, old time music, fixing things, and visiting his friends at Brickstone Manor where he lived since January of 2007. He especially enjoyed visits from the grandchildren.
He is survived by sons; Gary of Universal City, Mo., Michael (Denise) of Comfrey, and Kevin (Rhonda) of Springfield; daughters, Mary Ellen (Corey) Jeanetta of Duluth, and Joleen (John) Price of Mound; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Matt (Verna) Ludewig of Fairfax, Charlie (Marlys) Ludewig of Morgan, David (Marietta) Ludewig of Sleepy Eye, and Fritz Ludewig of Springfield; and sister Adeline (Eddy) Braulick of Sleepy Eye.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Alvina in 1994; daughter Kathy in 2007; son Daniel in 2004; and brothers, Felix, Leonard, and Cyril.
