  • Do you remember birthday parties from your childhood? I’m not sure mine had the same intensity in planning as some do these days, but perhaps. Childhood birthday parties are not just events, they are experiences.
It all begins 364 days before the event. There is so much excitement from the day before and so many new ideas for the next birthday! What the theme will be, who will come, what events will occur, and what food will be eaten. It’s a big deal! Children are such skilled planners. They reconsider their plan of attack many times, and they can, because they have allowed themselves much time to prepare. By the time the event is close, it has been thought through quite thoroughly.
So, invites go out and the exhilaration and anticipation begins. Where children gather, there is great enthusiasm. Walking the halls at school, one can easily learn who is having a birthday party and who is invited. Proud feelings are all around and children are happier than ever. Whether a child knew before, or just learned by receiving an invitation, they now know that they are important to the birthday boy/girl. It’s amazing to observe. The children stand closer, play more, or just talk more with the birthday child. The difficulty is with limits, a child would easily invite all the kiddos and people they know, all the people that are important to them. What a bash that would be! But numbers must be limited, so that parents will be willing to have parties again.
The day finally arrives, children wake earlier than ever, and the birthday boy/girl, along with the guests, watch that clock like never before. If they didn’t know how to tell time, they sure get a good lesson on the day of a birthday party. “Is it time yet? How many more minutes?” can be heard in many households, as eager birthday party-goers wait. The birthday party begins and excitement fills the house. What a beautiful site, many young children laughing, running, playing, imagining and creating fun games to play all together. Projects, food, cake and presents.
The birthday child is breathless with gratitude for all the thoughtfulness and generosity, and the friends are breathless with anticipation of their present being opened. They are so proud of what they have brought, some putting such time and attention into creating or choosing the perfect gift. Hearts pounding, minds racing and thrill fills the air! Grinning from ear to ear, children comment, “I knew he’d like my gift!”
Friendships grow, meaningful experiences are had with special people, and perhaps memories are built for a lifetime, childhood birthday parties. Did you know there was so much to them—almost having a life of their own!
